About the Teacher:
Philosophy:
"Teach a child how to think, not what to think." S. Sugarman
My goal is to foster a community of problem solvers and life long learners.
Our environment is welcoming, safe and engaging.
In our community of learners students are taught about proactive and reactive choices, how to recognize "big and little" problems, and the tools for preventing and/or solving conflicts.
"Never settle for less than YOUR best"
Academically we learn to support each other and celebrate our differences.
The students are guided as they recognize their strengths as well as what areas
challenge them. We work together to set goals and develop strategies that will allow us each to grow.
In a nurturing environment the students are able to reach goals and improve with pride as opposed to avoiding a difficult skill. Not only do students feel confident and successful, they
recognize the power of effort and perseverance. Self reflection and growth motivate the students to continue to try new things and improve, with the basic understanding that everyone learns in their own way.
If you were to observe our classroom you would see interactive whole group mini-lessons and small group, hands-on learning. I work to keep the students actively engaged
while allowing them to differentiate with in a group to meet and challenge
their unique academic needs. Students are given structured choice in their daily
learning to foster independence and increase intrinsic motivation. Students are the leaders of their learning and experience the value of rigorous, relevant activities.
Problem solving is modeled, practiced and expected in our room. It is a joy to guide students as they flourish into motivated, independent learners throughout the year.
